What Is a Physiatrist?

Physiatrist
The medical specialty of Physiatry is also known as Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, or PM&R. A major focus of the field involves the diagnosis of neurological and musculoskeletal conditions (nerves, muscles, bones, joints) through the use of a range of clinical exams, imaging studies, and other diagnostic tests, the formulation of an individualized treatment plan, and providing non-surgical treatments to improve pain and other symptoms with the goal of improving function and quality of life.

At La Plata Physical Medicine, we provide a thorough evaluation of patients with back, neck, joint, nerve and muscle problems through comprehensive history and physical examination and the use of other diagnostic tests and procedures when necessary. These tests may include: EMG (nerve and muscle testing), X-rays, MRI, laboratory tests, and diagnostic/therapeutic injections.
